Just breathe

Sometimes, we hypnotists, in our rush to apply the latest and greatest hypnotic technique that we just learned, can forget about the basics.
What basics? Well, generally advice that we received as children from our grandmother! In this case, ‘Just breathe!’
As always, grandma was right. And as is increasingly happening, the fact that she was right is being proved by modern neuroscience. In this case, controlled breathing, whether used as part of a meditative or physical practice such as yoga or tai chi, as part of an NLP pattern such as the B.E.A.T pattern, or simply as part of a self-hypnosis ritual, breathing has many proven benefits, including:
- Lower stress and anxiety
- Reducing blood pressure and other physical stress markers, with all the attendant health benefits such as reduced risk of heart attack and stroke
- Increasing brain size and density
- Moderating certain gene expression
