Sleep and the power of anchors

Anchors are perhaps the most powerful influence in our lives. We might wish to believe that we are logical, rational beings, carefully considering our options before we act. But the truth of the matter is that we are ruled by our unconscious mind, buy our emotional reactions to things around us, and most of all by environmental anchors.

The research below talks about various ways to conquer insomnia. But a careful reading of the research shows that all these studies rely on environmental anchors. In particular, the studies point out that anchoring your bed to anything other than sleep (and of course sex) leads to problems. Reading in bed, or watching TV in bed can be the slippery slope that leads to insomnia. Worst of all, tossing dn turning while you try and fall asleep is the ultimate recipe for insomnia.

Go to bed to fall asleep. And if you don’t fall asleep, don’t stay in bed until you’re ready.

Milton Erickson knew this, that’s why he had his insomnia client get up when he couldn’t sleep, and polish the floors until he was ready.

Teach your insomnia clients ways to fall asleep. And if they can’t get them up and moving!

Here’s the research:
