‘Gratitude’ is a buzzword these days for good reason. You see, research shows that positive thinking not only  makes you feel better, but it may actually help in the treatment of depression, at least mild depression.

Research such as that carried out by Kristin Layous shows that when you engage in positive thinking, including activities promoting gratitude, you feel more positive, view the world in a more positive light, and engage in more positive behaviors.

Even better, positive thinking often creates positive perceptions, which leads to positive behaviors, which in turn lead to positive experiences. And when you have positive experiences you can feel grateful…

Application to hypnosis

When helping hypnosis clients, especially those with depression (with the appropriate medical referral) or those just feeling down, gratitude can be a great way to begin the process of change toward more positive trains of thought. You can use NLP’s ‘six step reframe‘ as the basis of a ‘gratitude trance‘. The six step reframe involves a fractionation where the hypnotist leads the client into alternate progressive trances where the client is invited to offer gratitude to their unconscious mind. SO the fractionation is:

  • Go into trance and carry out task A
  • Come out of trance
  • Go into trance and thank the unconscious mind
  • Come out of trance
  • Go into trance and carry out task B
  • Come out of trance
  • Go into trance and think the unconscious mind
  • Come out of trance

And so on. This begins to build a gratitude habit that can serve the client well.
