Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance

By on September 12, 2014

Here is an article about using what we would call past resourcing in NLP. Past resourcing simply involves thinking of a time in the past when you felt the state or resource you want to feel now.

In the article the resource was a sense of ‘power’. The participants were asked to write about a time when they felt powerful. This helped to generate a sense of power in the moment, which in turn lead them to both write more powerfully on a job application, and also to behave more powerfully in a subsequent interview.

Of course in NLP or hypnosis, we would not only perhaps ask our client to write about an event, but also to step into the experience by reimagining the event using their working memory, seeing what they saw, hearing what they heard, and feeling what they felt. Unfortunately the researchers do not seem to have explored how this might have impacted on their results.

The research was carried out by Derek Rucker from the Kellogg School of Management, along with several colleagues. Here is a brief description of the research.

the researchers have developed a simple strategy—bringing to mind past experiences of power or lack thereof—to quickly make people feel either powerful or powerless. They have found that being in a high-power state makes people feel, and act, quite differently. Powering Through the Interview – A powerful mindset can help applicants land the job
