In this amazing TED talk, neuroscientist Nancy Kanwisher explains the state of play of brain scanning, and the profile of the brain as currently understood. The talk is punctuated by a wonderful video in which researchers send an electric charge to a subject’s fusiform face recognition region while he is looking at the doctor.

Brain imaging pioneer Nancy Kanwisher, who uses fMRI scans to see activity in brain regions (often her own), shares what she and her colleagues have learned: The brain is made up of both highly specialized components and general-purpose “machinery.” Another surprise: There’s so much left to learn.
